"Earth Day" and Fire Drill exercise at SR Sungai Liang

What is Earth Day?

Earth Day is a special day that celebrates the Earth. Earth Day was born on April 22, 1970, in San Francisco, California. Every year, America and over 100 different countries join together in the celebration of Earth Day on April 22nd. Earth Day is the largest, most celebrated environmental event worldwide.

Why Earth Day?

On Earth Day, we remember to appreciate nature and learn ways to protect our environment. Find ways that you can help keep the planet clean and help protect our environment!

Our school celebrated Earth Day on the first day of the 2nd Semester (28th March). We had our usual assembly in class (it rained yesterday morning so we can't conduct our assembly at the assembly area). At 7.30 am, all pupils and teachers gathered in the hall for a presentation about Earth Day by Cg Noor Siti Azlina bte Sulaiman. There were also Q & A in between the presentation with the pupils. At the end of the presentation a video about Earth Day attracted the pupils interest on Earth Day.

After the presentation, different activities were provided for different levels.
At exactly 8.40 am, one of our male teachers switched off the school's circuit breaker to conserve energy for 1 hour. The time was taken by Cg Rosarman b Abd Wahid. During the 1 hour of power shut down, we had the recycling company from Daikyo Sg Duhon, Kuala Belait to come over to collect the recycled materials (tins, plastics & papers) brought by the teachers and pupils. The materials were weighted on the spot. Overall, we managed to collect 23kg tins, 12.5kg plastics and 61kg papers. Altogether we were paid $26.70. That's a good start. The money will be distributed to the teachers and pupils that contributed the recycled materials.

At 9.40 am, the power was switched on.

After break, at 10.45 am, we had a surprise! A fire drill exercise was conducted without the knowledge of the teachers and pupils (except the SMK committee). Everyone went to the assembly point safe and sound. The SMK committees checked every class and rooms for any pupils that were left behind. Congratulations to all SR Sg Liang teachers and pupils for making the exercise a success. We managed to get to the assembly point in 3 mins 15 seconds (a big improvement from the last exercise). And also congratulations to the SMK committees for job well done. Although there were still a few improvements that needed to be made.

A good start for the 2nd semester, right??? :D
